The Origins of Yoga

New philosophy series starting on 13 October 2018

We will consider questions like:  What is yoga?  What is self?  Self?  What does immortality mean?  What is to be learned that cannot be taught?  What is the meaning of prana?  What is vayu?  Where does pranayama and asana come in?  What do bhakti, karma and jnana yoga mean?  We will study text from the Rig Veda, the Upanisads, the Bhagavad Gita.

There are regular reading assignments.  It is possible to do minimal reading or extensive reading, according to one’s interest.  Classes are interactive, with discussion and sharing thoughts and personal experience.  A reading list is given for this course.
Philosophy means ‘love of wisdom’ and is not separate from ‘practice’.  If you are practising yoga, bring some light with the study of philosophy.
This course is suitable for those who practise yoga.

Bringing Vijnana into Astanga

Vijnana means understanding, from inside, from one’s own experience – wisdom.  Vijnana Yoga is a practice based on Vijnana.  Astanga means eight limbs, referring to the eight limbs of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra.  The Astanga Vinyasa Yoga practice of Pattabhi Jois is based on the eight limbs.

In this workshop we will bring these two together, philosophically and practically.

Date:  Sunday  10.00 – 17.00      Sorry, this workshop does not have a date.
